The Social Sculpture Project was a public art initiative curated by Mimi Lien and myself from 2022 through 2024, where ten early career designers and artists presented their work within the physical space of Lincoln Center, that would function as a 'social sculpture'–a term coined by the German artist Joseph Beuys who defined it as "a work of art that employs human activity as a medium and strives to structure and shape society or the environment through language, intent, action and objects."
Historically, the artists presented at Lincoln Center have been 'known quantities,' which often means that the same audiences come repeatedly to see the work they are accustomed to. It also means that a large percentage of the population has been excluded for one reason or another, both as artist and as audience. This project aimed to circumvent the societal barriers that often prevent certain artists and audiences from participating in the cultural institutions of our city and country–aiming instead to serve as a vehicle to nurture BIPOC designers and artists through physically embodying and financially supporting their work.
